Almodóvar, who did not take part of the ceremony, picked up the Best Director Goya, while his brother Agustín (from El Deseo) was onhand to accept the Goya for Best Film.

A very thrilled Pénelope Cruz received the Best Actress prize (nearly one month before possibly becoming the first Spanish actress to win an Oscar), while her "ghost mother" Carmen Maura was chosen Best Supporting Actress.

Volver also won for Best Film Score (for Alberto Iglesias).
